Photographed wearing his upcoming Jordan Brand project throughout Summer ’23, “The Prince of Regaetton” has certainly upped the ante on this collaboration. Tackling the next silhouette within the Air Jordan series, J Balvin has delivered another piece of strong storytelling on this Air Jordan 3, with sneakerheads and fans all eagerly awaiting the drop. Putting aside the loud rainbow colourway from his debut Air Jordan 1 and the light-up tongue on his Air Jordan 2, the “Medellín Sunset” is his most wearable offering to date. Considering the artist’s global recognition, the hype is already expected to be high, but a viral video of Balvin handing DJ Khaled his sample pair straight from off his feet became the talking point for sneakerheads across the world. With both musicians meeting on a golf course in Miami, Balvin told the internet icon, “We call them Medellin Sunset. You know this is the sunset of my city. I was in Medellin one day, I just took a picture of a beautiful sunset of my city, you know my city is so special man”. Few sneakerheads have pointed out the connection to the Air Jordan 1 High OG “Skyline” due to the use of gradient hues, a technique that has continued to dominate the footwear industry over the last few years.Based on the same tooling as the “White Cement Reimagined” iteration, the upper is constructed out of off-white leather, with the iconic elephant print also formed from sail hues. Just like the recent Air Jordan 1 High x UNION LA x Bephie’s Beauty Supply collaboration, the panel edges and bottom eyelets are subtly painted in yellow, complementing the sunset hues on the rear and Jumpman on the tongue. Of course, all eyes are drawn towards the sunset detailing on the heel and midsole, reflecting the many shades that Balvin captured in his photo of the Medellín skyline. From a bright orange all the way down to a deep purple, the gradient is certainly one of the most pleasing that has graced the Air Jordan lineup. Fans of the AJ3 will also be happy to see the return of the “Nike Air” branding, while the right depicts Balvin’s signature smiley face logo with thunderbolt eyes, which unfortunately has nothing to do with the legendary fragment design moniker.Even with a retail price point of £210, demand will be high for the J Balvin x Air Jordan 3 Retro SP “Medellín Sunset”, so make sure to hit the “Notify me” bell to stay up to date on the drop. The recently leaked black “Rio” edition will also draw more eyes and hype to this release, so expect tough competition for the 27th of September release date.
